“René was literally inhabited by the tale of Napoleon on Saint Helena. Usually, a screenwriter is able to answer any question about his story but, in René’s case, it was quite simply mind-blowing. Since the film has a Chinese box structure, he could argue infinitely about the motivations of the characters in Monsieur N and then extrapolate from the real story once all the connections had been made. René was in his element, displaying imagination, rigour, Machiavellianism and humour. He was generous enough to offer me the key to this world and to act as my guide. I haven’t yet finished thanking him."
